In Dead by Daylight (DBD), "generators" (often shortened to "gens") are one of the core mechanics that Survivors must focus on to escape the trial. As a Survivor, repairing generators is essential to power up the exit gates, which you need to open to escape. Here's a general walkthrough of the process of repairing generators in Dead by Daylight:
1. Finding a Generator
- Generators are spread across the map, and you'll need to find them to repair. They are typically located in open areas, buildings, or secluded corners.
- The generators are large, with a flashing light or pulsing indicator when you're near them.
- If you're playing against a Killer who has perks that make generators harder to repair (like Corrupt Intervention), these will be locked or located farther from the start.
2. Starting the Repair
- Approach the generator and hold the repair button (default "Action" button).
- This starts the repair progress, and you will hear the sound of the engine turning on.
- The progress bar at the bottom of the screen will show how far along you are in the repair.
3. Skill Checks
- While repairing, you'll need to hit Skill Checks to continue the repair process.
- A Skill Check is a small white prompt that appears, and you'll need to hit the Skill Check button in the center of the circle that appears. Timing is critical, so hitting it too early or too late will cause a failed Skill Check.
- Failing a Skill Check:
- If you fail, it causes a loud noise notification, alerting the Killer to your position and regressing the generator progress.
- Some Killers have perks like Overcharge, which make failed Skill Checks cause more regression.
- If you succeed, the generator's progress will continue.
4. Cooperation with Other Survivors
- Generators can be repaired faster if multiple Survivors work together on the same generator. Each Survivor adds their own repair progress to the generator, reducing the total time required to complete it.
- Be cautious when repairing in groups—if the Killer arrives and catches you, multiple Survivors can be downed quickly.
5. The Generator's Progress
- As you repair, the generator will progress in stages. If you're playing solo, you’ll need to focus and work through the entire repair process.
- You can see how much progress is left through the repair bar, and the closer you get to 100%, the more intense the sound becomes.
6. The Generator is Completed
- Once the generator is fully repaired (progress reaches 100%), it will activate and emit a loud sound, indicating that the generator is done.
- The generator will then light up and produce a loud noise that can attract the Killer’s attention. This can be a great opportunity to escape, but it also makes you more vulnerable to being found.
- Now the exit gates will be powered, and you can move toward opening them.
7. Protecting the Generator
- Once a generator is completed, the Killer may try to sabotage it by placing traps or even kicking it (regressing its progress using certain perks like Pop Goes the Weasel).
- If the Killer downed a Survivor near a generator, it may cause more issues, such as the Hex Perks or Scourge Hooks related to the Killer’s abilities.
8. Exit Gates
- After repairing generators, the Exit Gates will become accessible, allowing you to attempt to escape. These gates can be powered only after a set number of generators are completed, typically 5 out of 7.
- Once the gate is opened, you can escape and win the match, but beware—the Killer will often camp the exits at this stage.
Bonus Tips:
- Quiet Repairing: If you want to repair in stealth, you can try to repair away from the Killer's line of sight or during certain moments when the Killer is distracted.
- Perks for Generator Repair:
- Prove Thyself: Increases repair speed when multiple Survivors are on the same generator.
- Boil Over: Makes escaping from hooks harder, while Aftercare can reveal the position of other Survivors.
- Decoy Tactics: Sometimes, it’s worth leaving a generator for a while if the Killer is nearby, letting it regress naturally (and with perks) to ensure that they don't stay near your location.
By following these basic steps and strategies, you'll get better at repairing generators in Dead by Daylight and contribute to your team’s success!
